Ownglow – Inside The Silence EP. Summer Vibes From Hospital’s Next Generation

Despite their huge roster of top flight artists, Hospital Records is never a label to take it easy when it comes to the search for new talent. Enter Arizona’s Ownglow, who started making waves with last year’s A Walk to Remember EP and appearing alongside Logistics with the fantastic Flutterbyes on the NHS300 EP.
Ownglow’s status as one to watch is further reinforced by Inside the Silence EP (out now on Hospital Records), a beautiful slice of sunny liquid, drawing together the classic Hospital liquid sound with hip hop, exquisite vocals, and some topnotch production.
Opening up with Breath, featuring emotional vocal work from Elle Vee, Inside the Silence lays its cards on the table as an unabashedly summery set of tracks. Also featuring electro duo Disco’s Over, Breath’s warm, rolling beats wouldn’t sound out of place on a Beta Recordings release and are perfectly complemented by the melodic and soulful piano.
Take Me, the first collaboration on the EP with Mitekiss, takes things deeper, with distorted vocals and a much rougher bassline kick, but this is tempered with some airy strings that keep it all from getting too dark.
A further vocal-centred track and another collaboration, this time with Dilemma, Mercy featuring Courtney Odom, is a fantastic piece of production, with Odom’s laid back jazzy vocals perfectly matched by the juddering bassline and the soulfully melancholic beats. Definitely the stand out track, of the EP, that rewind sample drives me crazy every time.
Last up, Glo Mello Flo further pushes the hip hop inflected sound that we first heard with Flutterbyes to produce a breezy and flavourful track that’s got more summer vibes than a disposable barbecue and a can of warm Kronenbourg.
If you’re a fan of Logistics or Nu:Tone, Inside the Silence is definitely not one to sleep on and I really can’t wait to hear more from Ownglow. Hospital clearly have a winner on their hands with this one.
