Avantgarde Recordings Returns From Its Hiatus With The Thor EP

Posted by Adam on 26th July 2017

8 months after their last release, Italian label Avantgarde Recordings is back with a 2 track release from various artists. Track one sees Break on remix duties, remixing the Disprove & Dabs collab Thor. It’s heavy and not as rolling as we’re used to from mastermind Break, which I personally think is refreshing to hear. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge of pretty much everything Break churns out, but hearing an artist explore some lesser known territory always puts a smile on my face. Let’s cut the crap though – while this might not be my favourite thing I’ve heard from Break, this tune bangs. It’s not boring and I love the switch up at the second drop. It’s one of those somewhat standard, but very solid techy tracks that will definitely perform well on the dancefloor.

Track two comes from label boss Dabs himself and Italian duo Was A Be, who have been making waves with their music on Shogun Audio. Lots of layered breaks, fragmented vocals and unconventional drum patterns make ‘Jitters’ a very apt name. The warbling atmospheres and weighty bass tones make for a somewhat muddy mixdown, but it really works for this track; sometimes – especially in neurofunk, I feel – it’s good to let elements fight with each other, as it creates conflict and gives the track a gritty edge. These guys succeed at this perfectly.
